How to plan a Kashmir summer trip — houseboat logistics, the Gulmarg gondola and the road to Sonamarg's glaciers — with honest notes on crowds and permit areas.

Dal Lake and the houseboat question

Staying on a Dal Lake houseboat is the standard Kashmir experience and a genuinely varied one. Quality differs enormously between boats — book through a recommended guesthouse or a trusted agent rather than accepting an unsolicited offer at the airport or bus stand. A mid-range boat with an attached bathroom and honest owner is better than a luxury boat booked through an intermediary.

A shikara ride at dawn, when the floating gardens are active and the mountains are reflected in the still water, is worth the early alarm. The evening light on the lake from the Hazratbal side is equally strong. Budget an overnight on the lake for at least one night, and resist the push to pack the day with organised activities.

Gulmarg: meadow and gondola

Gulmarg is 56 km from Srinagar (about 1.5 hours by hired car). The gondola runs in two stages: to the Kongdori plateau (2,600 m) and then to Afarwat peak (3,980 m). The upper stage is crowded in July and August; in June the wildflower meadow is at its best and the crowds are lighter.

For most summer visitors the lower gondola stage gives the best views without requiring high-altitude fitness. In winter, the upper slopes are used for skiing — one of the few accessible ski areas in India.

The road to Sonamarg

Sonamarg (3,000 m), 87 km northeast of Srinagar, sits at the edge of the Himalayan snowline and is the trailhead for the Thajiwas Glacier walk. The drive from Srinagar through the Sindh Valley — the river running alongside the road most of the way — is one of Kashmir's best drives.

Horses and ponies take visitors across the glacier in summer. It is commercial and unhurried rather than a serious trekking experience, but the landscape is dramatic and the scale of the valley makes the effort worth it.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to travel to Kashmir as a tourist?

Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are established tourist circuits with full infrastructure for visitors. Check current travel advisories and register with local authorities for any border-adjacent permit areas before you go.

What is the best time for Kashmir?

April to June for tulips, wildflowers, and pleasant temperatures. December to February for snow at Gulmarg and Pahalgam. July to August is peak tourist season — crowded and expensive, but green.

Do Dal Lake houseboats have proper bathrooms?

Most established houseboats have attached bathrooms with hot water. Confirm amenities directly when booking — quality varies significantly between budget and mid-range boats.
