A short hop with familiar food and an easy pace — how to plan Sri Lanka's hills, ruins, and southern beaches in one relaxed week.
Why it feels familiar
Sri Lanka is one of the gentlest first trips abroad for Indians. It is a short flight, the food is recognisable, rice and curry is everywhere, and the rhythm of daily life feels close to home while still offering plenty that is new. An online ETA is required before you travel, so apply in advance and confirm the current process.
What you get in return is an unusual amount of variety in a small country: ancient cities, misty tea hills, a famously scenic train, and a warm southern coastline — all reachable within a week without long travel days.
The route most people love
A satisfying loop runs from Colombo up to the cultural triangle — Sigiriya's rock fortress and the Dambulla cave temples — then to Kandy and onward on the hill train to Ella, one of the most beautiful rail journeys in Asia. Finish on the south coast around Galle and Mirissa for beaches, the old Dutch fort, and seasonal whale watching.
Book the Kandy–Ella train seats ahead in peak season, and do not over-schedule: Sri Lanka rewards a slower pace and a little time spent doing nothing on a verandah in the tea country.
Practical notes
Hire a car with a driver for the longer transfers — it is affordable and saves you navigating unfamiliar roads — and use tuk-tuks for short hops. Carry some cash for smaller towns, and agree tuk-tuk fares or use a metered app before you set off.
Seasons flip across the island: the west and south coasts and hill country are best from December to March, while the east coast shines from April to September. Plan your beach time around the right coast for your dates.
Common questions

Do Indian travellers need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Indian travellers need an online ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before arriving. It is quick to apply for online; always confirm the current fee and process on the official portal before booking.

A week is ideal for a first trip — enough for the cultural triangle, the hill country and the famous train, and a few days on the south coast. Ten days lets you slow down further.

It is good value. A week typically costs about ₹40,000–70,000 per person including flights, mid-range stays, food, and transport, with short flight times keeping airfare reasonable.
What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
December to March is best for the west and south coasts and the hill country. The east coast is better from April to September. Pick your dates around the coast you most want to visit.
