Beginner-friendly to demanding trails near Manali — when to go, how hard each is, and how to acclimatise before you climb.

Acclimatise before you climb

Manali sits at a comfortable altitude, but the trails around it rise quickly. Give yourself at least a day in town before a high trek, drink plenty of water, and watch for headaches, nausea, or breathlessness — the early signs of altitude sickness. If symptoms build, descend rather than push on.

A short warm-up walk like Jogini Falls or the Lamadugh meadow on your first full day is a smart way to test your legs and lungs before committing to anything higher.

Trails by difficulty

For easy days, Jogini Falls and Lamadugh offer forest paths and meadow views without serious altitude. For a step up, Beas Kund — the glacial source of the Beas river — is a popular moderate trek through the Solang valley.

For more demanding multi-day routes, Hampta Pass crosses from green Kullu valleys into the stark Lahaul desert, and Bhrigu Lake climbs to a high alpine lake above the treeline. Both reward fitness, layered clothing, and a guide who knows the conditions.

Season, guides and safety

Late May to June and September to mid-October are the most reliable trekking windows. The monsoon brings landslides and slippery trails, while winter buries the higher routes in snow. Always check current conditions locally before you set out.

Use a registered local guide or operator for anything beyond a day walk, carry proper layers and rain protection, and never trek high alone. Leaving an itinerary with your homestay is a simple habit that matters when phone signal disappears.
